The Mayday weekend began with an incredible afternoon of action at the United Downs Raceway.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Another strong showing of F2s saw 29 drivers in attendance, including World Champion 7 Gordon Moodie, who was making his first appearance at St Day since July 2015. In the opening heat, 398 Ian England, 105 Ross Rowe and 418 Ben Borthwick contested the lead, with Borthwick eventually breaking free despite the hazard of a three car pile-up in the turnstile bend which included 111 Lewis Geach, 91 Harrison Bryant and 241 Ginge Crook. Heat two saw Rowe relieve 663 Bryan Lindsay of the lead early on, whilst 24 Jon Palmer scattered a group of cars in the turnstile bend, but spun himself in the process. Rowe was out of range out front, despite a late charge by 127 Matt Stoneman which earned him his second runner-up finish. 895 Ben Goddard quickly established himself in the lead of heat three, as Palmer progressed into a distant second place. Goddard was away and gone, but Palmer was hunted down by gold top Moodie. At the start of the last lap, Palmer slowed as Moodie came to challenge, but that opened the door for 126 Jamie Avery to speed past and grab second place. There was an unfortunate start to the final, as Moodie’s attack of the star graders resulted in Geach and Stoneman tangling. As they came to a halt on the back straight, the yellow flags were shown, but that could not prevent the lead pack from crashing into them, with 118 Josh Toll at the front of the train which collected the two red tops. The field was much thinned out for the re-run which again soon saw Goddard clear in the lead. Moodie was beginning to make good progress from the back of the grid, but having shifted a gaggle of cars in the pits bend, he then had Palmer on his tail as he charged towards turn one. Moodie, Palmer, Borthwick and 315 Justin Fisher were line astern as they entered the turnstile bend, but Moodie was sent hurtling into the plating, which left him with significant front end damage. As the race continued, Moodie still circulated, albeit on three effective wheels, and when Palmer came to lap him, Moodie ran him out of room in turn four and both cars crashed into the plating together. Palmer limped out of the fence, and on to the infield with his front bumper fouling his fence side front wheel. Moodie also pulled on to the infield with some parallel parking next to Palmer, who leapt from his car to begin a frank exchange of views with the Scotsman before walking to the safety area. In the race, Borthwick had moved into second place, but he could do nothing about Goddard who sealed a comprehensive victory to win the glorious Snell Family Trophy. Palmer was loaded up for getting out of his car under green flag conditions and Moodie was loaded up for turning (right) into an overtaking car. The Grand National saw Borthwick put the seal on a fine afternoon for himself, as he caught Rowe, and nudged him on his way to a second win for the day.
National Bangers (under 1600cc, non-Mondeo)
A very disappointing showing of National Bangers contested this year’s Boneshaker, but even though there were not many present, the drivers who did appear put on a hugely entertaining display. 621 Scott Kendall took an early lead in the main race, which was all rather processional until 531 David Hosking reversed out of the fence in turn one, right into the line of traffic. He was duly collected at great speed by 206 Matt Brewer. Hosking’s Fiesta was decimated, and the driver also heavily shaken up, but after some rest he was feeling much better by the end of the afternoon. The remaining four laps of the race were run, with Kendall sealing the victory from last year’s Boneshaker champion 451 Nigel Belfield and 190 Steve Bailey, who bundled 842 Jack Perkins around the fence on the last lap. Belfield won the first Allcomers in which Kendall sent 59 Mike Hamley around the plating. The second Allcomers was full of action as Hamley, Belfield and Kendall formed a three-car train that rattled around the fence at each end of the circuit. Perkins, Bailey and 278 Shaun Brokenshire did likewise, whilst 162 Brett Ellacott took the chequered. Five cars made it out for the Destruction Derby, which ended with victory for Brokenshire after he finished off 205 Matt Cottle and Brewer.
Saloon Stock Cars
The season’s best showing, yet, for Saloon Stock Cars in Cornwall resulted in some spectacular action, and a day of days for teenager 561 Aaron Totham who racked up a faultless hat-trick of wins. 470 David Vaughan was an early spinner in heat one, whilst 130 Chris Durrant was left facing the wrong way in turn three. 902 Junior Buster spun aside 56 George Boult Jnr on the home straight, with Boult responding late on to send 447 Adam Hicks bouncing off the turnstile bend plating. By then, Totham had collected his first win, ahead of 800 Scott Greenslade. Durrant’s hectic afternoon continued in heat two, as he was spun into the tyres on the home straight, which sent him skywards. Greenslade grabbed the lead, only for Totham to fight back and regain first place. Hicks and 980 Charlie Lobb moved into second and third, but could not reel in Totham, who won again, whilst Lobb’s last bend move sent Hicks wide and earned the teenager second place. Totham completed a trio of wins in the final, with Junior Buster and 199 Phil Powell inheriting second and third place late on after Greenslade retired in the closing stages.
