Out came the Spring sunshine for the second Smeatharpe meeting of the new national Stock Car racing season.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
126 Jamie Avery enjoyed his finest hour yet, with a career first F2 final win. Avery was actually first home in his heat, but was docked two places for a jumped start. However, Avery made amends in the final, with a faultless drive that won him the day's main prize from Exeter Gearbox Centre.
The rest of the day was dominated by the star men. 677 Chris Roots took an exciting first heat, and 676 Neil Hooper benefitted from Avery being docked in heat two. The consolation went to 315 Justin Fisher, and following up his runner-up finish in the final, Hooper went on to extend his Track Championship lead with another victory in the Grand National.
Less fortunate were a number of Cornish racers. 830 Andrew Bennett and 992 Ian Jefferies encountered problems during Practice, which prevented them from racing, whilst 31 Simon Bassett had a loss of oil pressure and 835 Matt Westaway blew his engine to pieces at the end of the final.
National Bangers
Both 190 Steve Bailey and 239 Steve Carter racked up large points hauls in the season's first World Championship qualifying round for the National Bangers.
Bailey won both heats, and Carter led home 719 Chris Storey and Bailey in the double points final.
That runner-up finish was a fine display by Storey who had rolled over in heat two.
Convert from F2s, 891 Darren Wade, had an eventful day, as he despatched 410 Dan Galley and 252 Steve Bugler into the west bend fence in successive races.
Ministox
Once again the youngsters in the Ministox shared out the honours, with a different race winner in each of the three races.
In the opening heat, 991 Ryan Hoskin left it late, just grabbing victory on the final lap, whilst long time leader 986 Sophie Fasey held on for the win in heat two. A late race suspension in the final, for newcomer 997 Frankie Radmore, closed up the field for the remaining couple of laps, and 942 Steven Gilbert struck, in style, as he just pipped Fasey on the final bend to win by a slender margin. 989 Joe Marquand completed the top three.
