An afternoon of mist and drizzle could not dampen the spirits of racegoers who assembled in good numbers for the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos event at the United Downs Raceway, St Day.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The Tyrone Snell Trailers sponsored F2 final, was arguably the most exciting feature race of the season at St Day, with a spate of lead changes and dramatic incidents all the way to the final lap of the race.
797 Dan Moss, 302 Dale Moon and 290 Jay Tomkins accounted for the heats, as the Cornish drivers took control on home ground.
White grader 916 Luke Thomas led the final all the way until the lap boards appeared for the final quarter. Then, 116 Ashley Rundle edged past and looked on course for a career first final win. However, Rundle then clipped the parked car of 950 Lewis Holden on the back straight, which handed the lead to 189 Paul Butcher, who was being doggedly pursued by 797 Dan Moss. Butcher could not shake Moss off, and in the very last bend, Butcher drifted wide, and that left the door open sufficiently for Moss to charge by and score the second feature final win of his career. Butcher was second and Thomas third, for the best result of his career so far.
990 Paul Rice won the Grand National, to complete a gloomy day for the star men.
Bangers
Just over 50 Bangers contested their first meeting since early June, and produced some fast, exciting racing.
In the first heat, 938 Ashley Rice scored a last lap victory over his travelling mate, 820 Ian McNaught. Heat two saw 247 Richard Sparks time his run to perfection, as he grabbed the lead late on. Devon Champion stylishly cruised to the flag in the consolation.
The final saw a succession of different front runners, with 10 Iain Sparks, 881 Gary Emery, 947 Luke Purdy and 46 Dennis Richards all enjoying a spell as the race leader. However, it was local star 415 Sean Gillett who swiftly cut his way through from the red grade, to move into contention. Gillett went on to win, with 246 Ryan Sparks in second and 60 Andy Bulled completing the top three.
Ryan Sparks then won the Allcomers after Richards and Iain Sparks delayed one another, opening the door for the Points Champion to pounce.
Cornish Caravan Chaos
Fifteen caravans graced the track for the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos, and as ever, there was carnage, destruction and devastation right from the start. Although several drivers completed the first lap, there were many less on track at the end of a brutal second lap. 998 Martin Knowles took an early lead, and then 210 Mike Johns looked to have taken command. However, he lost his caravan, which became detached from the car, and Johns was forced to retire to the infield. Briefly, 78 Dave Weare inherited first place, but when he got entangled in the back straight parking lot, 154 Barry Pike took over. Pike had to take many a run-up to get around the pits bend, on occasions, but the efforts of 847 Andy Whatley helped to clear a route. Pike went on to win, for the second year in a row, and as the chequered flag came out, Whatley brilliantly destroyed the 860 Dan Perryman caravan on the home straight, which had been in tact for the whole race.
Ministox
Each of the day's three Ministox races produced a different winner. First to take a chequered was 942 Steven Gilbert, as he won an exciting opening race for the youngsters, with 935 James Flint the runner-up. The second race had many fallers, with assorted incidents. In the closing stages, 991 Ryan Hoskin burst through to take the win, from 945 Ashley Prisk. The final saw 936 Alfie Whitelegg establish himself out front, and he went on to score a win for the third successive meeting.
