It was balmy Spring sunshine all the way at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, where nearly 100 competitors contested the circuit's second meeting of the year.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
An impressive showing of just under 30 cars contested the season's first St Day fixture, and 676 Neil Hooper laid down a marker that he will be making a concerted effort to defend his Track Championship title.
Throttle linkage problems hindered his run in his first heat, but Hooper then took his next heat, before winning an enthralling feature final. However, to underline the competitive nature of the day's racing, Hooper could only return to tenth in the Grand National, after conceding the obligatory one lap handicap.
605 Liam Rowe and 886 Chris Bradbury were the other heat winners, and they too featured in the final. It was 835 Matt Westaway who led much of the race, but yellow flags were called for when 14 Mike Priddle and 522 Chris Mikulla hooked up on the back straight. That drastically reduced Westaway's advantage, and with four laps remaining, Hooper swept past. When Westaway was baulked by the jam car of 306 Neil Truran, he slipped further down the order, to fifth, with Rowe and Bradbury following Hooper home for the other podium places.
Westaway enjoyed better fortune in the Grand National, romping to victory ahead of fellow mid-Cornwall yellow tops 830 Andrew Bennett and 302 Dale Moon.
Saloon Stock Cars
Despite relatively low car numbers, the Saloon Stock Cars provided some fine racing, including a mesmeric last lap of the final, in which 30 Barry Hollett dumped National Champion 120 Shane Brown to complete a hat-trick of victories.
Former Championship holders 207 Darren Bradford and 382 Danny Hunt made their return to the grid, and 199 Phil Powell posted a string of fine results.
Bangers
Over 50 Bangers contested their second St Day date of the season, and the action came thick and fast, with a number of rollovers and big crashes.
Amidst all of the chaos, 441 Dan Sutherland had a day to remember. His immaculate car was a Best Presented award winner, and clearly went as well as it looked, for 'Suthy' proceeded to win the feature final and the Allcomers race.
Earlier in the day, 607 Gary Sillifant took the first heat, and 286 Rich Crowther scored a maiden win in a senior class in heat two. A late run by 117 Ollie Starr saw him win the consolation.
