Smeatharpe Stadium - Monday 4th May 2009
On a very cold Mayday Monday, a reasonable sized crowd were entertained principally by the Micro Bangers and the Saloon Stock Cars, whilst the Stock Rods appeared in their best numbers for some time, and the Ministox also fielded a good entry of young racers.
Micro Bangers
The annual Micro Bangers Triples race raised plenty of laughs and smiles, none more so than when the bonnet of 266 Ian Meaker's Morris Minor flipped up to obscure his vision. Victory went to 308 Jamie Wilkie - 222 Justin Herbert - 474 Darren Polden, who survived a late scare. Just as 246 Ryan Sparks - 243 Ben Smith - 244 Ali King came to challenge, the third of their triple became detached, hence the North Devon trio held on for the win.
Brothers 246 Ryan Sparks and 247 John Sparks took the next two heats, before a thrilling DD went the way of 172 Nick Crocker.
Saloon Stock Cars
30 Barry Hollett took the top prize in the £1000 Teng Tools Challenge, to land the West of England Championship.
Hollett earned himself a pole position start in the main race, and survived a frantic opening lap, before extending his lead. 186 Todd Jones recovered from an early race spin to charge back up the order and edge 120 Shane Brown wide on the last bend, before claiming second place.
Stock Rods
The Stock Rods appeared in terrific numbers, with 25 drivers in action, including a pair of rear wheel drive Toyota Starlets.
909 Justin Washer won the opening heat on his track debut, and 394 Mike de Paiva took heat two on his first appearance of the season. 244 Ian Frampton crossed the line first in heat three, but was docked two places for pushing aside backmarker 241 Stewart Watters on the last bend, which promoted 669 Eddie Trofer into the winner's place.
The final went the way of de Paiva, from Frampton, Trofer and Washer.
Ministox
A wealth of visiting stars bolstered the ranks of youngsters, and helped to produce some exciting race action. There were heat wins for 156 George Boult and 171 Adam O'Dell, before 971 Jason Cox took the Reg Thomas Memorial Trophy final, ahead of 995 Ben Goddard and 938 Ashley Rice.
