United Downs Raceway - Sunday 20th September 2009
Racegoers were treated to some blazing late summer sunshine for the latest monthly event at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, where almost 100 competitors raced in a three formula meeting.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
497 Piers Cockerill scored the first St Day final win of his career, as he took top honours in the Imports 4 U sponsored feature event. The win held further significance, for Cockerill became the seventh different driver, in as many meetings, to win a F2 final at St Day this season. In a thrilling race for second place, 676 Neil Hooper just pipped 105 Ross Rowe, and in their mad scramble for the line, Rowe careered off down over the infield banking.
Earlier on in the day there had been heat wins for 877 Eddie Darby, Hooper and Rowe, whilst 116 Ashley Rundle also rolled over on the back straight during heat one.
Rowe completed a memorable day for himself by winning the Grand National, and that victory put the seal on the Track Championship, with one meeting to spare.
Ministox
Each of the three races for the youngsters in the Ministox produced a different race winner, with two of the victorious drivers enjoying a first ever victory.
In the first heat, 945 Ashley Prisk was first over the line, but he was disqualified for spinning 938 Ashley Rice ‘inside out'. That promoted 979 Paul Moss into first place, and the win was his first ever.
Prisk bounced back from his disqualification, to win heat two, in which 954 Hannah Sear rolled over on the back straight.
Gamely, Hannah was back on the track for the final, and she earned her reward for persistence by taking third. The win went to 953 Sam Matthews, by just three hundreths of a second, from Ashley Rice.
Bangers
Once again, it was 282 Steve Hunt who stamped his authority on the day's action for the Bangers.
Another impressive entry saw over 50 drivers at St Day for the second successive meeting at the circuit.
Hunt comfortably won the feature final, but there was a spirited drive by 153 David James, which netted him second place, and 991 Ben Hale completed the top three.
321 Mark Johns won the first heat on his Autospeed Bangers debut, 677 Glenn Nash took heat two and 156 Kev Gooding claimed the consolation on a rare visit to St Day.
The Allcomers race was lively, and action-packed, but 415 Sean Gillett picked his way through the frantic chaos to take the chequered flag. 28 Steve Linly and 422 Tristan Beresford had each had a turn in the lead. Whilst Beresford had to retire from the race when his car caught fire during a race suspension, Linly held on for fifth place.
