Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 22nd March 2009
Glorious Spring sunshine was the order of the day for the March fixture at Smeatharpe, which saw nearly 50 BriSCA F2 Stock Cars in action, ably supported by Saloon Stock Cars and a World Championship qualifying round for under 1800cc National Bangers.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
There was a heat and final double for 783 James Rygor, who made a track debut to remember for all time. The youngster, still in his first month of BriSCA F2 action, came under pressure from 832 Kane Moore towards the end of the feature race. However, Moore then tangled with a backmarker, and Rygor was able to reel off the remaining laps to put the seal on his first ever final, which landed him the splendid MDP Services Annual Trophy.
In all, 47 F2s raced - a tremendous car turnout for the opening date of the season.
Saloon Stock Cars
Not only did 10 Frank Little secure his first home track victory in the Saloon Stock Cars, but he succeeded in posting a career first three race hat-trick.
Little won the opening heat comfortably, but was a trifle fortunate to be gifted heat two, when first over the line 328 Ian Govier was docked two places for a jumped start.
Govier tracked Little for much of the final, but a broken cam belt sidelined him just as he was preparing a challenge, and that left 402 Shaun Webster and 65 Ian Willis to complete the top three.
National Bangers - under 1800cc
Both 190 Steve Bailey and 239 Steve Carter added handsomely to their World Championship points hauls.
Most of the day's action came in heat two, which featured some spectacular crashing in the pits bend, involving 176 Ben King, 908 David Brown, 266 Ian Meaker, 331 Duncan Kennard and 716 John Marshall, amongst others.
The majority of the day's cars were Mondeos, whilst the three cars judged to have been the smartest of the day were those of 47 Marcus A'Lee, 81 Matt Buckland and 719 Chris Storey.
