Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 23rd August 2009
An incredible car count of just less than 100 drivers featured in the World Championship Semi Finals meeting, which was staged at Smeatharpe for the first time.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
A dramatic, spectacular and exciting first World Semi Final, saw assorted drivers in the lead, but having been knocked back down the order in the opening stages, 886 Chris Bradbury launched a fine fight back to take the win, ahead of 854 Robbie Dawson. Third went to 676 Neil Hooper who pulled off a very smart move on the last lap, to go from fifth to third, at the expense of 152 Mick Sworder and 968 Micky Brennan.
There was a stoppage and complete re-run of the second World Semi Final, but whilst 7 Gordon Moodie comprehensively won the race, as many had predicted, it was the progress of 218 Rob Speak from grid eighteen to the runner-up place, which caught the eye, and he will now have designs on a ninth World crown.
The meeting final was won by Hooper, from 401 Barry Goldin, and that meant Semi Final one would occupy the inside line for the World Final, at Buxton on 13 September. 538 Chevy Mills completed the top three in the meeting final, and fourth went to white grader 409 Luke Maw who cemented a momentous first visit to Smeatharpe with a runner-up finish in the Grand National, behind 877 Eddie Darby.
2-Litre National Bangers
A rather ordinary showing from a small field of 2-litre National Bangers, saw 190 Steve Bailey cruise to a hat-trick of victories. Amongst the overdose of racing, there were some notable crashes, and a brutal DD at the end of the day, which saw 239 Steve Carter see off 55 James Ogborn and 741 Alex Waterman to take the honours.
Reliant Robins
The three-wheelers put on a splendid performance, on the occasion of their first fixture at Smeatharpe for this season. There were countless rollovers as the drivers responded magnificently to the added bonus of a Best Entertainer award in each of the trio of races.
After 87 Barry Richards had stormed to victory in both heats, he found plenty of opposition in the final, and thus, 46 John Coombes took full advantage, to win from 78 Mark Bowskill and 117 Craig Wright.
