Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 29th November 2009
A huge "well done" would appear to be in order for all of the drivers, crews, spectators, officials and racegoers who braved some decidedly horrible weather conditions at Smeatharpe's Last Day Of Term meeting. A small number of the National Banger drivers gamely entered into the spirit of the "School Days" theme, but turning out in school-themed fancy dress on the Grand Parade, which also featured the Ministox.
National Bangers (unlimited cc)
There was an interesting mix of cars for the final unlimited cc date of the season in the westcountry, including an old Volvo for 99 David Spooner, a Triumph 2000 for 411 Simon Giles and a Vauxhall Carlton Limo for 410 Daniel Galley. There were also three used Mk I Granadas, for 514 Marty Eighteen (on his track debut), 239 Steve Carter and World Champion 190 Steve Bailey.
The furthest travelled driver, rising teenage star 17 Kyle Overy, won the first heat. Eighteen took heat two, and Bailey was the winner of the final, which clinched him the Autospeed Points Championship.
Just three cars made it out for the DD, which went to Andrew Jones, in the borrowed 382 Tommy Hutchings car.
Stock Rods
37 Barry Trickey clinched both the Grand National Championship, and the overall Points Championship in the Stock Rods, even though he encountered gearbox problems in the first of the day's two Allcomers races.
Trickey swept to victory from pole position in the GN Championship. 27 Andy Thomas and 92 Adam Daniels took second and third, after 565 Andy Giles was docked two places for his untidy barge past Thomas in the closing stages.
A close-fought Last Chance To Win race saw 730 Brendon Sealy take the chequered, and in the two Allcomers races that followed, 49 Kev Lock and 34 Glenn Sanders also recorded their first victories of the season.
Ministox
A fine showing of over 20 youngsters contested a trio of Ministox races.
Heat one saw 124 Ollie Skeels cross the line first, but he was docked for jumping a restart, and that handed the win to 104 Joe Parker.
In heat two, Parker and 315 Tristan Claydon were each docked, for a jumped start, and that saw 156 Georgie Boult inherit the win.
Skeels took the final to clinch the Track Championship, whilst Boult finished as the runner-up and third went to 960 Dale Moon.
