Day one of Speedweekend produced some superb action from all four classes that were on duty.
Saloon Stock Cars
Just shy of 40 Saloon Stock Cars contested a quintet of British Championship qualifying heats, which were typically rumbustious. The first heat went to 18 Jamie Clayton, and runner-up 512 Darren Barnett then took heat two. South west hopes were raised when 328 Ian Govier stormed to victory in heat three. Barnett won again in heat four, when he led home his brother, 511 Craig Barnett. That completed Darren Barnett's scoring at 29 points, which was an unbeatable total to earn him pole position for the title race. Heat five saw Craig Barnett take the chequered, as he secured the other front row start. 28 drivers scored points.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
An impressive showing of 51 drivers contested the afternoon and evening F2 events, which began with a fairly routine Young Guns race. 186 George Turiccki regained the title, as he led home the Northern Ireland pair of NI312 Christopher Kincaid and NI57 Jack Boal. The next three races all had superstar victors, as 886 Chris Bradbury and 38 Dave Polley took heats two and three, and 7 Gordon Moodie won the consolation. A huge grid of 34 cars set off for the meeting final, and Moodie showed top form to speed to the win, ahead of Polley, 497 Piers Cockerill and Turiccki. Bradbury won again in the GN, which also saw 276 Murray Jones spin out Moodie who was progressing well from his one lap handicap.
National Bangers - One Sunny Day
A superb showing of over 30 Sunnys contested this year's One Sunny Day/One Sunny Evening event. Six drivers were honoured with Best Presented Awards, whilst there were two stand out winners in the Oldest/Rarest category - 369 Gary Holmes and 943 Paul Golden - although the search for a RWD Sunny continued. The opening race went to 55 James Ogborn, and 66 Dave Spooner took the next race, which saw a lively exchange involving 191 Ashley Kemble (on his first appearance of the season), 364 Nathan Olden and 252 Steve Bugler. The One Sunny Day final went to 382 Danny Hunt, as he led home 131 Stephen Cock and 235 Chris Elkins (who was also making his first Autospeed appearance of the season).
Ministox
Even though numbers were slightly down on some recent meetings, the youngsters still served up some fine racing. Both 935 James Flint and 966 Rich Crowther were back in action, having had medical attention at the last St Day meeting. White graders 932 Sam Moore and 989 Joe Marquand set a fast pace from the front, and they accounted for the two heats. In the final, Points Championship leader 991 Ryan Hoskin took the honours, as he led home 945 Ashley Prisk and 953 Sam Matthews.
