The final national fixture of the season at the United Downs Raceway, was one of high significance, for National Bangers and BriSCA F2 Stock Cars in particular. After heavy overnight rain, the meeting actually took place in dry conditions.
National Bangers
World Champion 190 Steve Bailey marked his return after a four month absence by storming to victory in the Cornish Championship. 452 Anthony Sleeman and 341 Andrew Jones finished as second and third respectively.
In the first of two Allcomers races, 55 James Ogborn led until the closing stages when he was bundled into a spin in the turnstile bend, and he then became beached on the infield banking. Bailey pounced on the chaos involving the leaders, and picked up the pieces to seal his second win of the afternoon.
A third win came Bailey's way in the Allcomers race, when he edged past Jones in the closing stages.
Just four cars made it on track for the DD, which was won by 452 Anthony Sleeman when he saw off 45 Anthony Croshaw in a big head-on in the pits bend.
239 Steve Carter was a Best Presented winner, along with 177 Will Powell and 178 Michael Davies - the latter pair's smartly painted orange and white cars being quite superb.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The day's F2 events near enough put 676 Neil Hooper in dreamland, as he won both his heats, and the Old Motor Cycle Club Trophy final. With thirteen lead laps completed, too, Hooper scooped £325 of added prize money.
The opening race for F2s saw fourteen drivers contest the White & Yellow grade final, which developed into a three-way shootout between 954 Jamie Beere, 797 Dan Moss and 605 Liam Rowe, with Rowe hitting the front five laps from the end. Rowe went on to win, to repeat the victory he managed in the corresponding event last season.
The win helped Rowe to maintain his lead in the Track Championship, but in heat two, Neil Hooper overhauled 954 Jamie Beere late on to take the victory. Rowe and Hooper met in heat three, and whilst Hooper won again, Rowe suffered a puncture and could only limp home in tenth.
That gave Hooper a seven point lead going into the final. 785 Liam Deeble showed good speed to clock up four lead laps at the start of the race, and then 916 Luke Thomas took over to grab the next three laps. However, Hooper was already on his tail and he pounced to hit the front, before leading home 990 Paul Rice, who gallantly chased him all the way. 374 Gary Stephens was third. With Liam Rowe failing to finish, Hooper duly put the seal on the Track Championship.
Continuing his fine end of season form, 954 Jamie Beere swept to victory in the Grand National.
Ministox
The day's races for the youngsters proved to be especially successful for 935 James Flint. In the first heat, Flint won for the first time in his career. Flint then went on to win again in the second race. The Final was interrupted by a big crash at the end of the back straight, which then resulted in damage to the safety fence. Once that had been repaired, after a lengthy delay, the race resumed, with Flint out front once more. However, he came under fire from 315 Tristan Claydon, only for 991 Ryan Hoskin to dive underneath both cars and grab the lead. However, Claydon fought back and shoved Hoskin wide, to regain the lead. Claydon went on to see out the last two laps, whilst Hoskin was caught up by the chasing pack and fell down the order. Claydon won, Flint was second and third went to 996 Phil Chapman.
Reliant Robins
A small number of three-wheelers kept the crowd entertained with some fun antics.
87 Barry Richards swept to a hat-trick of wins, but the Entertainer Awards were shared out amongst 776 Terry Senford, 707 Jeremy Moss and 386 Bobby Stilgo.
