A sizeable crowd assembled at Smeatharpe for the annual Caravan Chaos fixture, which this year boasted the first ever Crash For Cancer Care for the National Bangers, and crash they did, in a particularly hard-hitting display.
Saloon Stock Cars
120 Shane Brown swept majestically to a faultless hat-trick of victories in the Saloon Stock Cars. Amongst Brown's closest challengers were 199 Phil Powell, Scottish star 618 Stuart Shevill and 103 Chris Horwell, who should have ended the day with more to show for his efforts than a rurnner-up finish in the second heat. 34 Glenn Sanders made a Saloon Stock Car debut, and 198 John Metcalfe raced at Smeatharpe for the first time.
National Bangers (under 1800cc non-Mondeo/Cougar)
The first ever Crash For Cancer Care event for National Bangers, in aid of St Margaret's Hospice, produced some of the hardest hitting and roughest action from the National Bangers at Smeatharpe so far this season. There were scores of enormous hits and jacking trains throughout the day, with much of the action involving 247 Richard Sparks, 246 Ryan Sparks, 341 Andrew Jones, 191 Ashley Kemble and 452 Anthony Sleeman. The hits came thick and fast, as the drivers certainly tried to put the 'crash' into Crash For Cancer Care. Autospeed Bangers star 242 Ben Ellacott took both heats, but was unable to overhaul 776 Terry Senford in the final, and thus the Cornish racer took the main prize, with 55 James Ogborn third and 402 Charlie Callard the only other finisher in fourth. Ogborn had further glory when he won the short-lived Destruction Derby.
Ministox
Track Champion 124 Ollie Skeels notched a heat and final double in the Ministox. In the first heat, Skeels just reeled in 955 Lewis Holden, but Holden made sure he was not caught in heat two. The third heat saw 156 Georgie Boult spin 986 Sophie Fasey aside one lap from home, to become the third winner of the afternoon in the junior class. A fraught and untidy Ministox final was stopped one lap early when 953 Sam Matthews rolled over. Skeels was already in the lead at that stage, which netted him the win by returning the result to the last completed lap. Second went to Boult, with 954 Hannah Sear in third. The full result remains subject to a Steward's inquiry.
Reliant Robins
Over a dozen "plastic pigs" contested the season's lone Smeatharpe fixture for Robin Reliants, and 87 Barry Richards proved unstoppable as he racked up a hat-trick of race wins. During the afternoon, there were assorted rollovers and spills, as the three-wheelers proved surprisingly speedy.
Caravan Chaos
Approximately a dozen caravans were smashed to smithereens in the annual Caravan Chaos race. Only two car/caravan combinations went the distance in this most destructive of races, with 369 Gary Holmes leading home 145 Lee Morgan. Holmes duly regained The Colander Trophy he had won previously.
