A packed crowd at the United Downs Raceway enjoyed some spectacular action from this year's Blockbuster meeting. Even though numbers in the National Bangers were below the hoped for level, there were still some terrific cars and paintwork on display, and together with four lively races, those drivers present did their best to serve up some good action.
National Bangers
In a similar way to Crasharama earlier in the season, this year's shortfall of cars for Blockbuster called for a change of plan to the running order, and subsequently, the title race was an all-in affair at the very start of the programme for National Bangers.
Thus, a packed grid of 32 cars set off in pursuit of the Blockbuster title, and plenty of action duly followed. Five laps into the race, and with cars strewn everywhere around the circuit, the raced had to be stopped when one car developed a small fire. Once that was sorted, the race resumed, in which 384 John Golden and 901 John Stoneman fought for the lead. All the while, they were being tracked by 252 Steve Bugler and 241 Liam Cracknell. With just three laps to go, Bugler shoved Stoneman into some parked cars in the turnstile bend, to grab the lead for himself, and he held on for victory. Cracknell was the runner-up, Golden third and 202 MIke Kilford was fourth. The only other finishers were 47 Marcus A'Lee and 66 Dave Spooner.
Stoneman got some consolation when he took the first of two Allcomers races, and Kilford won the second of them.
Eight cars limped on to the track for the DD, in which 702 James Dodge took some weighty punishment in the turnstile bend. 127 Peter Wake and 55 James Ogborn met in a solid head-on as the last two cars running. Both Volvos cried, "No more!" and thus the win was shared between them.
Saloon Stock Cars
The day's trio of races for the Saloon Stock Cars yielded a different winner each time. 103 Chris Horwell reeled in 995 Ben Goddard very late in heat one, and 120 Shane Brown benefitted handsomely in heat two, when backmarker 834 Dan Climo spun race leader Goddard aside in the closing stages. Goddard ran strongly again in the final, but fell back to sixth at the finish, whilst 125 Mike Hibberd managed to overhaul 240 Tony Gould on the last lap to take an exciting victory.
Ministox
124 Ollie Skeels won the Cornish Championship for Ministox, in a thrilling three-way shoot-out for the title. Skeels, defending Champion 167 James Meadows and 315 Tristan Claydon fought out a wonderful battle for honours in the feature race.
Earlier in the day, there had been heat wins for 955 Lewis Holden, 128 Craig Banwell and Skeels, but the Cornish title race was a compelling contest, that had racegoers enthralled at the skills of the young racers.
