An afternoon of mixed weather made for some tricky conditions at the United Downs Raceway, where more than 40 BriSCA F2 Stock Cars contested their World qualifier, with supporting action from the National Bangers and the youngsters in the Ministox.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Over 40 F2s contested the St Day World Championship qualifying round, and despite a plethora of top name stars, all of the race wins went to yellow and blue roofed drivers. On his first St Day F2 appearance, 286 Todd Jones took the opening heat and Track Champion 105 Ross Rowe led home a star studded field in heat two The consolation brought a career first victory for 797 Dan Moss. An extremely exciting and hectic final saw lots of incidents involving ex-World Champions. 218 Rob Speak departed early with a misfire, and 401 Barry Goldin spun out 7 Gordon Moodie. Much of the race was led by white grader 31 Simon Bassett, but in the closing stages, he was caught by the pack, and 189 Paul Butcher held on at the front for the second St Day final win of his career, with 886 Chris Bradbury in second, Todd Jones third and 254 Richard Beere fourth. 116 Ashley Rundle won the GN, whilst Bradbury took his third runner-up finish of the afternoon.
National Bangers (under 1800cc - no Mondeos/Cougars)
Despite lowly numbers, there was a prevailing spirit of fun and smiles amongst the National Bangers, and with 179 Stu Nightingale at the wheel of an old Ford Capri, he featured prominently in what action there was, not least when 247 Richard Sparks buried him and sent him into a rollover in the pits bend. Two of the stars of the Autospeed Bangers, 246 Ryan Sparks and 242 Ben Ellacott showed their racing skills, by each winning a heat, and 55 James Ogborn proved uncatchable in the meeting final. The Entertainer of the Meeting award went to 776 Terry Senford, who became embroiled in a good natured spat with 131 Stephen Cock and 429 Sam Trengove during the third race.
Ministox
The youngsters in the Ministox excelled with a magnificent Summer Holidays Fancy Dress Parade at the start of the meeting. There were numerous outstanding efforts. When racing began, there were slightly sparse heats, but after back to back victories for 932 Sam Moore, the third heat produced a remarkable last lap finish, which included repeated lead changes. 991 Ryan Hoskin just managed to get home first to take the chequered. In the final, 989 Joe Marquand sped impressively to the win, with Moore the runner-up and 903 Adam Neville completing the top three.
